Since September 2000, the outbreak of violence in Israel has resulted in an unprecedented number of Israeli casualties. The impact of this violence on individuals, families, communities, security and medical institutions, the economy, and the overall social fabric of Israel has been devastating. The precept of kol Yisrael areivim zeh bazeh (All Jews are responsible for, and existentially united with, one another)-a value we all hold dear-demands an immediate and unfettered response.

In recognition of the above, the Riverdale Jewish Center established the RJC Israel Emergency Fund (IEF) to provide the community with a means to respond to the current crisis. A committee will review and research written requests for assistance presented to it by the RJC membership. Funds will be allocated exclusively to institutions or organizations that have demonstrated an effective capability of preventing, remedying or, at least, mitigating the acute medical, psychological, social and economic consequences of terror.

The committee will ensure that appropriate disbursements are made, without regard to personal or political bias. It will distribute funds directly, without any administrative or other costs, and in a timely manner so that a zero fund balance remains in the IEF account. The committee will also provide reasonable follow-up and feedback to the RJC community.

As the purpose of the IEF is to maximize RJC assistance to our brothers and sisters in Israel who are victims, and potential victims, of a brutal and overwhelming terror campaign, it is our sincere hope that this committee will be rendered obsolete b'ezrat Hashem in the not-too-distant future.
